How SEO and Google Ads (Formerly AdWords) Work Together

Best way How to SEO and AdWords Work Together in 2023

Google AdWords was renamed Google Ads in 2018, but the question many businesses ask has not changed: should we invest in SEO or in paid search? In most cases the better question is how to make the two work together.

Paid and organic results do different jobs

  • Google Ads buys visibility immediately for chosen keywords. Traffic stops when the budget stops.
  • SEO builds organic visibility over time. It takes longer, but the results keep working without paying for each click.

Together they cover both short-term and long-term goals.

Five ways they support each other

1. Shared keyword data

Google Ads search-term reports show exactly which queries trigger your ads and which ones lead to conversions. That is valuable input for SEO: build or improve organic pages for the terms that convert, and avoid investing content effort in terms that never do.

2. Testing titles and messages

Ad variations can be tested quickly. When one headline consistently earns more clicks, use what you learn to improve page titles and meta descriptions for organic results.

3. More presence on the results page

Appearing in both the ads and the organic results for an important query increases your share of the page and reinforces your brand. Measure carefully, though: for some brand searches, organic results may capture most clicks without ads.

4. Covering gaps while SEO matures

New services and pages take time to rank organically. Paid search can bring traffic and data from day one, then be scaled back as organic rankings improve.

5. Remarketing to organic visitors

Visitors who arrive through organic search but do not convert can be reached again with remarketing campaigns, provided you have the necessary consent where the law requires it.

Practical tips

  • Use the same landing-page principles for both channels: one clear purpose per page, fast loading and a clear next step.
  • Review search terms monthly and add negative keywords to stop wasting budget.
  • Track conversions consistently so you can compare channels fairly.
  • Reassess spend regularly: shift budget away from queries where you already rank strongly and convert well organically.

Conclusion

SEO and Google Ads are strongest as partners. Paid search provides speed and data; SEO provides lasting visibility. Plan them together and each channel makes the other cheaper and more effective.
